Condolences on the Passing of Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali
IIUM Holdings Sdn Bhd extends its condolences on the passing of Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali, former First Lady of Malaysia. She died on 28 September 2026 at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur at the age of 100.
Our thoughts are with her husband, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and the family during this difficult time. The IIUM Holdings Group also prays for their strength.
Tun Dr Hasmah: A Pioneer in Medicine
Tun Dr Hasmah became one of the first Malay women to qualify as a doctor. She came from Klang, Selangor, and turned 100 in July 2026.
Her career began in 1955 as a house officer at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. A year later, she moved to Alor Setar Hospital in Kedah as a medical officer. Her team also took health programmes to rural communities, covering immunisation, nutrition and disease prevention.
She retired from government service in 1979. After that, she taught social medicine part time at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Malaya, until 1981.
Service to Women, Families and the Community
As the wife of the Prime Minister, she supported Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during both of his terms in office. In that role, she championed maternal health, family planning, literacy, drug abuse prevention and mental health. She also supported women’s welfare and community service.
Many Malaysians remember her for her warmth and humility. After her passing, leaders from across the country paid tribute to her. The King, the Queen and the Prime Minister also conveyed their condolences to the family.
State Funeral for Tun Dr Hasmah
The government accorded Tun Dr Hasmah a state funeral in recognition of her contributions. Thousands of mourners attended the funeral prayers at Masjid As-Syarif in Taman Sungai Besi Indah.
Later that evening, her burial took place at Pusara Negara, Precinct 20, in Putrajaya. Tun Dr Mahathir and the family were present, according to Bernama. She leaves behind her husband and seven children.

We pray that Allah SWT forgives the sins of Tun Dr Hasmah, showers her with His mercy and grants her soul eternal peace. We also pray that He places her among the righteous.
